Up for sale is a great serviced example of a classic 16mm Cinema lens by Bell and Howell , the Super Comat 25mm (1 inch) f/1.9
Originally
designed for Bell and Howell 16mm film cameras by Taylor, Taylor, and Hobson, this stunning lens
features lovely chromed brass construction and fantastic image
quality, with phenomenal rendering, sharpness, and beautifully smooth bokeh.
This can be used not only on
vintage 16mm film cameras, but also without vignetting on both Super16
sensor sized digital cams such as the BMPCC and digital Bolex . This
lens also achieves full coverage
on 16:9video on 4/3 size sensor cams such as Panasonic GH series, Olympus
PEN/OM digital, etc. with slight darkening in the corners on full m4/3 frame shooting.
This
lens features the
standard C cinema mount making it easy to use not only on vintage 16mm
film cams but also on various modern Super16 digital
cinema cams like digital Bolex and BMPCC, or on m4/3 still cams with
full frame coverage with an inexpensive C to m4/3 adapter (sold
separately).
Nice
vintage condition with light-moderate exterior wear, brassing, oxidation. Front element has some superficial marks in the coating. Otherwise free of scratches/haze/fungus.
Lens has been disassembled and CLAed and aperture declicked, and grease has been replaced with modern
grease, giving it a smooth, focus throw across all focal lengths, and aperture
ring is nice and smooth as well.
This is in stark contrast to
nearly all unserviced examples of this lens, whose focus and aperture
are typically hard-to-turn or completely frozen due to the original
grease used drying out over time.
