Gen. George Washington at Trenton (1792), by John Trumbull

U.S. #711 is one of the George Washington Bicentennial Series stamps issued in 1932, honoring his 200th birth anniversary. Each stamp’s design is based on a famous painting of Washington. This stamp was painted by John Trumbull, one of the most renowned artists of the day. The image is not from one of the portraits Trumbull painted, but instead is taken from the painting “George Washington Before the Battle of Trenton.”

Washington Bicentennial
On January 1, 1932, the US Post Office Department issued a set of 12 stamps honoring the 200th anniversary of George Washington’s birth.

The Post Office officially announced their plans for the set of stamps in November 1930.  Early on, they had grand ideas for the set.
