French Huguenots, French / Italian, 19th Century Historical Antique Oil Painting
A magnificent, fine and fresh to the market large oil on canvas depiction of the persecution of the Huguenots in 17th century France.
To the left hand side of the painting is a young woman kneeling at an altar and deep in prayer, an older woman beside her is holding a smoking flintlock pistol in her left hand. We see a young man in the centre foreground apparently wounded, perhaps fatally.
To the right hand side there are two men grappling with each other in a desperate struggle and on the extreme right are other figures observing the scene.
An highly theatrical painting in which the frantic struggle between the protagonists is both realistic and convincing.
Apparently unsigned and housed in a good moulded gilt frame.
Late 19th century or very early 20th century, probably French school, re-lind and in excellent condition, with chalk catalogue numbers verso.
The image dimensions are approximately: 50 1/2'' x 37 1/2'' (90cm x 71.5cm).
