From the cover: “When war was declared in 1939‚ the British Army was very much the ‘Cinderella’ of the three armed services. Its total strength was some 865‚ 000 men with many of the 325‚ 000 regular field force being spread far and wide across the British Empire. The rest were mainly enthusiastic Territorials who were equipped with outdated weapons and equipment‚ together with newly called-up Militiamen and Special Reservists. Initially the only properly organized and equipped force was the 160‚ 000 British Expeditionary Force which would be safely transported to France by 27 September 1939 without a single casualty‚ but would lose their all in the debacle that followed in the summer of 1940. Delivery takes up to 5 working days in the UK but is mostly faster‚ and I aim to despatch orders next day except those placed on Friday or Saturday which will ship the following Monday.
