This is a great Fenton Glass handled bowl or comport in their historic “Cherry Chain” pattern and their quintinessentially 70’s “Lime Sherbet” color— or, to put it another way, “Green Satin". "Satin Glass" was made by using acids and other chemicals to soften the glossy finish on opaque glass in the 1970’s. The result is a soft, pleasant, soothing color. Fenton's satin glass in particular sold very well in the 70's when the line included Custard Glass (yellow satin), Blue Satin, Rose Satin (pink satin), Lavendar Satin (purple satin), Crystal Velvet (clear satin) and this color, Lime Sherbet. The popularity of satin glass faded in the 1980s and new EPA regulations made it more difficult to use the chemicals to finish the glass. The amount of satin glass in the Fenton line fell sharply after 1982, and the colors all disappeared entirely by the end of the decade. Lime Sherbet was the least popular of the major satin production, and all items in Lime Sherbet were discontinued at the end of 1979.
The mould here is based on an old carnival glass mould. It is intricate and detailed. The outside of the bowl has the “Orange Tree” pattern. Fenton made this item only from 1973 through 1975.
