A beautiful tiny treasure, this Stuart Crystal button is in quite excellent condition, very clean without any fogging under the crystal. Very pretty and bright red foil on the bottom with a bed of woven fabric atop that with a curling gold band that continues into the center design cipher in the middle on top of that.  The crystal and elements under it are all securely set in the closed back silver setting, a nice size measuring a bit under 1/2" across. Very rare and especially wonderful the crystal so excellent without chips or cracks; the interior elements all very bright and well preserved.

Stuart Crystals are becoming increasing rare in any size or condition, especially with the additional elements underneath the crystal. They will always be English in origin, dating from mid 1600s to early 1700. They have a fascinating history originating as private jewelry made by loyalist for King Charles Stuart when William of Orange attempted to usurp the throne. Shortly after that they were made as sentimental jewelry or as memento mori remembrances and finally they were made for personal adornments, like this button here, which could have always been just a button or part of a cuff link, dating to about 1690.
