This listing is for an exceptional 19th century academic male nude figure study that comes from the German school. The drawing is executed in charcoal on heavy paper and signed "A. Schrack" along with a date of 1884. The artist, who is unknown to me, might be identified by consulting the Thieme-Becker dictionary. I have two additional studies by Schrack, and there he abbreviates his first name as "Ag." and "Agr."
In this sheet, the artist captures the model's pose with a rare sensitivity, creating a delicate portrait with emotional resonance. Though still, it appears as if the model is about to move, perhaps to stand or look up toward the viewer.
I recently included this study in my first catalog, "Collecting the Male Nude," and several images from that publication are included here for reference. If you would like a PDF copy of the catalog, please write to me with your email address.
The drawing measures approximately 16"w x 22 3/4"h. It is in overall good condition, though the sheet is tanned and there are pinholes at the corners. Note subtle creasing and minute tears near the top and bottom edges, and the presence of a few small stains. The drawing was once matted and there are faint traces of the matting. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions.
