Purchased in an antique market in Beijing China 28 years ago, it’s had pride of place in our Chinese decor room ever since. 6 feet X 29inches. Most likely a very very old Copy as the artist was born in 1642 see history below. Even though the old gent assured me it was authentic.

We have now down size and no longer have a display wall. I have to let it go unfortunately But it is visually stunning and shows it’s years but has no damage due to use or terrible fading. All of the marks in the pictures are historic and no new. Never exposed to direct sunlight during display. I have never seen another anywhere in the years I’ve owned it but have often looked to try balance my display but no joy.

THE ARTIST

Shitao

Shitao (石濤, ca. 1642–1707), born Zhu Ruoji (朱若極) was a Chinese artist of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Born in Quanzhou County (全州縣) in Guangxi province, Shitao was a member of the Ming royal house. He narrowly avoided catastrophe in 1644 when the Ming dynasty fell to the invading Manchurians. Having escaped by chance from the fate to which his lineage would have assigned him, Shitao became a Buddhist monk at an early age.
