ARGENTINE CHIEF POLICE OFFICER COUTEAU SHORT SWORD RAPIER MODEL 1908
MADE BY W.R. KIRSCHBAUM 1854-1883

Although the Argentinian rapiers and sabers for Junior Police Officer and Chief Police Officer are known as Models 1908, these models come from European models made during the 19th century by the big European factories that had a number of standard models which were the ones they offered to the different countries that bought for their different military forces, they have been used by the Argentine Police between 1854 and 1936, until argentine production began between 1936 and 1945.
In 1883, W.R. Kirschbaum merged with Gebr. Weyersberg to form the new Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. brand. They have been used by the Argentine Police between 1854 and 1883 with "W.R. Kirschbaum" markings, and later between 1883 and 1936 used with "Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie." markings.

Couteau or Rapier for Chief Police Officer manufactured by W.R. Kirschbaum prior to 1883.
It corresponds to the Model 1908 Chief Police Officer's Saber, they have the same hilt with the difference that the saber has a pair of cups and knuckleguards and the rapier has only one cup and no knuckleguards.

The blade is nickel plated carbon steel with rat-tail tang, two-edged dagger type, has a large ricazzo, and both sides are acid etched with floral motifs and ornaments.
On the left ricazzo are the factory marks: "W.R. KIRSCHBAUM SOLINGEN" and its logo, the helmet.
The guard: the handguard is a single piece of bronze together with the cup.
The quillions have floral motifs and on their tips have two faces.
The cup has the Argentine National Crest, secured with two riveted pins, between floral motifs.
It continues with a small ornamented ferrule, the wooden hilt, with grooves and a twisted double bronze wire, painted in black.
The pommel is bronze with ornamental engravings and the image of a goddess of war, all fixed by a bronze screw that threads into the tang of the blade.

Metal scabbard painted semi-matte black, with oval frog stud marked "55". The throath is held in place by a pair of screws. The scabbard has no dings but the paint shows several scratches from use.
