The Norfolk Naval shipyard or Norfolk Navy Yard (NNSY) is a US Navy facility located on the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia. Its mission is to build, remodel and repair Navy ships and submarines with excellence, safety, and quality, within its budget and on schedule.

It was established, under the British flag, as Gosport Shipyard in 1767; then, in 1775 during the American Revolutionary war, it was confiscated by the Colony of Virginia.

The USS Chesapeake, the sister ship of the USS Constitution, was the first ship of six to be built at Gasport after the Revolution.

In 1862, the Gosport Shipyard was renamed the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after the largest town nearby, Norfolk, and not after the town of Portsmouth, in which it resides. That is partly to avoid confusion with the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire.

The Norfolk Naval Shipyard is the Navy’s oldest shipyard, and, in fact, it predates the United States Navy Department by 31 years! During its more than two century existence, it has assisted the nation win nine major wars, end piracy on the seas, explore the Pacific scientifically and open Japan to American trade. It is one of the few facilities on the East coast capable of dry docking nuclear aircraft carriers and it has nuclear technology and the ability to install complex weapon systems. Many consider the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to be the nation’s number one shipyard.

William. B. MacGregor Jr. Watercolors Nautical Chart Artist

William B. MacGregor, Jr. was born in Medfield, MA, the son and grandson of Norfolk Hunt Club kennel masters. Many of his family members were self taught artists, woodcarvers, automobile mechanics and veterans of foreign wars including his father a WW1 US Army veteran. Bill is a graduate of Medfield High School, Wentworth Institute, and Northeastern University. His engineering career, from which he is now retired, included working for military and aerospace companies in industrial engineering and IR optics. His painting incorporates “old skool” mechanical and civil drafting tools and he uses a mixed medium of watercolors, acrylics and inks. Two rabbits are often in quite a few of his paintings. Look for them. He is frequently commissioned by United States Naval officers to create paintings of their ships and aircraft carriers on nautical charts. In May,2018, and for one year, four of Bill’s automotive related paintings were on display at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA.
