This listing is for a phenomenal early 20th century studio photograph of the bodybuilder Eugen Sandow, with significant additions in pencil that emphasize his skin and musculature. These modifications were made with exceptional skill and are almost imperceptible when viewed with the naked eye. Upon close inspection, however, it is clear that nearly all of the details are carefully modeled in graphite. This mixed-media image is one of three related photographs purchased from a dealer near Paris. The two other images show an unidentified model in poses inspired by classical sculpture.

This photo of Sandow is rare and does not appear in internet searches. After considerable digging, I was able to find another instance buried in the auction record, though that print is cropped to reveal slightly more of the figure. When comparing them side-by-side, what is immediately clear is how much the photographic prints are "washed out" from overexposure, which is probably why few copies survive. Also clear is the remarkable extent of restoration in the present photo, which is quite unlike anything else I've seen. Note the many fields of silvery graphite that give this work its sculptural depth, the pencil almost caressing the figure as it rebuilds the shoulders, muscles of the torso, the nipples and veins in the arms. Even Sandow's belly button has been meticulously reconstructed and one would never know except for the color of the graphite, which exposes the secret. All lovingly detailed by an anonymous admirer at the turn of the last century. A truly rare, unique piece that speaks to the isolated longing and dedication that drove early collectors of gay photography, and a fascinating example of photography's role in the construction of identity and desire.

The photo was printed in a silver gelatin process on matte paper stock, and some faint silvering is visible around the edges. The back has a pencil inscription indicating Sandow's name. In an intriguing twist, there appear to be traces of a signature over the leopard-skin tunic; these are faint but one can make out the loops of cursive letters, including possibly a capital "B". Further investigation is needed.

Photo is approximately 3 7/8"w x 4 3/4"h. It is in overall good condition with minor surface imperfections, dust, and scratches. Note some small black marks. There is silvering toward the edges and some foxing on front and back
. All four corners are slightly worn. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions.
