The M-72 was a motorcycle built by the Soviet Union. Conceived as a replacement for the two heavy motorcycles used by the Red Army, the TIZ-AM-600 and PMZ-A-750, both of which had performed unsatisfactorily during the Winter War against Finland and were considered outdated designs. The replacement chosen was the BMW R71, which had been rejected by the German Wehrmacht as a replacement for the R12. As a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, the necessary legal, political and economic procedures were in place for BMW to provide the design, tooling and training for the manufacture of the motorcycle and military sidecar.
In the USSR, the decision to produce a special army motorcycle was made at the beginning of 1940. Under the leadership of N.P. Serdyukov, who from 1935 to 1940 underwent an internship at the BMW plant, a specialized design bureau for heavy motorcycle manufacturing was created on the basis of the Moscow Iskra pilot plant. The BMW R 71 (BMW-750) motorcycle, which by that time had proven itself well in the Wehrmacht, was chosen as a sample for complete copying. Five motorcycles were purchased anonymously from Sweden. Since the spring of 1941, the production of a motorcycle under the M-72 brand was launched at the Moscow Motorcycle Plant (MMZ).
Die M-72 („M“ für „Motozikl“, Motorrad) war ein Motorrad aus sowjetischer Produktion.
Das Motorrad wurde von 1941 bis 1957 in den Irbiter Motorradwerken hergestellt und sehr häufig mit einem Nachbau des deutschen Behördenbeiwagens Steib TR500 als Motorradgespann eingesetzt. In den ersten Baujahren war die M-72 eine detailgetreue Kopie der deutschen BMW R 71, die von 1938 bis 1941 produziert worden war.
Der Motor der M-72 ist ein seitengesteuerter 2-Zylinder-Viertakt-Boxermotor in quadratischer Auslegung (Hub und Bohrung sind gleich) 78 × 78 mm. Die Höchstleistung beträgt 16 kW (22 PS) bei 4950/min. Das Motorrad wiegt betriebsfertig ca. 220 kg, als Gespann ca. 350 kg. Die maximale Zuladung als Gespann beträgt 250 kg.
Die M-72 wurde von der Roten Armee im Zweiten Weltkrieg als geländetaugliches Fahrzeug eingesetzt. Da sie sich jedoch für schwieriges Gelände als ungeeignet erwies, wurde die M-72 bald verbessert, unter anderem: Neuer Luftfilter mit Ölfüllung, höhergelegtes vorderes Schutzblech sowie hinterer Schutzblechbügel zum besseren Aufklappen des Schutzbleches, um den Radwechsel zu erleichtern und Knotenbleche an der hinteren Stoßdämpferaufnahme. Die Knotenbleche waren notwendig geworden, da unter Einsatzbedingungen verstärkt Rahmenbrüche auftraten.
