THE AQUARIAN WEEKLY

Vol. 13, No. 183
November 9, 1977

Sondra Theodore cover

56 pages

A little larger than usual issue of The Aquarian, the New Jersey/New York Metro area's alternative news magazine. A lot of people probably don't know who Sondra Theodore is, but at the time she was Hugh Hefner's girlfriend, and  was Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month for its July 1977 issue. Of course, there is an article on her in this issue too. In this issue there is quite a bit of current events and news articles as well as some fashion, but most interested in vintage issues of the Aquarian are looking for other things.

Playwright David Mamet has a good article by John Grabowski, and there is "Behind the Scenes at 'The Wiz'" by Jack Yuken, as well as other articles on regional theatre. This issue also has a TV Listings section (which adds to the page count), a feature that didn't last long in the Aquarian.

It's the music section and articles that draws the most interest in these vintage issues though, and there is a Most Revealing Interview with Bad Company's Mick Ralphs; Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers; Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad); Art Farmer with the National Jazz Ensemble; Interview with Alan Price (The Animals) by Cathy Travis; and Jazz Guitarist Joe Beck. There is also an article on a cluib called Creation, a notable dance/music club in West Orange, NJ that hosted such acts as Twisted Sister, Muddy Waters, Meatloaf, the Ramones, Joan Jeet, Pat Benatar, David Johansen and others over the years. There is als an article on local band Topaz, that featured guitarist Billy Cross, who played guitar on Jobriath's two albums and was a member of his live band. Cross also played with Bob Dylan and Meatloaf, and also .played guitar on Robert Gordon/Link Wray's first two albums. Besides that, there are record reviews (Focus, Pete Townshend/Ronnie Lane, Robin Williamson, Rabbit, Rush) and great ADs, including a full page for Blue Oyster Cult's "Spectres" album.
