Days of Deer Stalking in the Scottish Highlands.  Scrope, William.  Glasgow: Thomas D. Morison, 1894.  Illustrated by Sir Edwin and Charles Landseer.  "Including an account of the nature and habits of the red deer, a description of the Scottish forests, and historical notes on the earlier field-sports of Scotland, with Highland legends, superstitions, traditions, folk-lore and tales of poachers and freebooters."  With frontispiece illustration, title vignette and 10 additional illustrations.  Especially handsome hardcover, bound in half leather with elaborate gilt crests and titles, and five raised bands on the spine.  Marbled boards and matching endpapers. Top edge gilt. 324 pages.  Very good condition, top right corners bumped. With crested bookplate of John Hopton of Canfrome in the County of Hereford on inside front cover.   

Colonel John Hopton (John Dutton Hunt 1858-1934) was a British soldier (Highland Light Infantry), landowner, and Olympic marksman.  He is said to have been one of the greatest marksmen of his day. He lived at Canfrome Court, his family estate, where he had a private shooting range.  The author, William Scrope, was an English sportsman, amateur artist and sports writer, known for his love of deer stalking. 

A handsome volume with an interesting provenance.
