The Gneisenau was a battleship of the German Navy. It was named after the Prussian Field Marshal August Neidhardt von Gneisenau (1760-1831).

After construction delays, she was put into service ahead of her sister ship Scharnhorst in 1938 and took part in various Navy operations during the Second World War, where she was damaged several times.

The battleship Gneisenau, often referred to as a battle cruiser, was in service in the first half of World War II. One of the most successful surface units in the Navy during the Second World War.

Between 1938 and 1942, together with her sister ship Scharnhorst, she carried out several Atlantic operations and sank, among other things, the aircraft carrier Glorious.

The Gneisenau was badly damaged by a bomb at the shipyard in Kiel in 1942 and was then taken out of service, with the armament being expanded and used as coastal artillery. In March 1945 she was scuttled as a block ship in the harbor entrance to Gdingen (then: Gotenhafen).
