What are you buying?

Plug plants are small, young plants grown in cell trays. Even the largest plug plants, described as extra-large or jumbo, are still small plants from cell trays and not established plants. Plug plants can be great value compared to buying more established plants however they may need some extra care to get them started.
We also offer our range of plants in larger sizes which gives the option to choose premium plants at a more advanced stage over the cost saving of buying plug plants. Please visit our shop for our full list of plants currently in stock.

Caring for Plug Plants

We recommend starting plug plants in a small pot and not planting directly into open ground or large pots/planters. You will want a plant pot roughly the size of a tea mug, commonly referred to as 7cm or 9cm pots. Ensure the pot has plenty of holes underneath and preferably over two tiers for even better drainage.

  • Fill the pots to just below the rim with a good quality multi-purpose potting compost.

  • Place the plant into the compost but avoid pressing down too much, a little shake can help ensure there aren't any major air pockets.

  • Ensure you water thoroughly, however, it is vital that the compost is allowed to dry down before watering again. It is the drying down of the compost that will encourage faster root growth for most plants.

  • Allow the pot to get noticeably lighter before watering again. Continue this process of watering thoroughly but not too often until you see roots through the drainage holes. The plant is now ready to be potted on.

About this plant

Growth Cycle

Annuals are fast growing plants that complete their life cycle within one growing season and then die. Some plants commonly grown as annuals can be kept year round if they are given additional protection through winter e.g. grown in a greenhouse or indoors as a houseplant. Biennial plants will grow and flower in their first season and set seed in their second year. As suggested by the name, these plants usually have a two year life span.

Hardiness

This is a H1c warm temperate plant. When fully established, this plant should be capable of withstanding temperatures to 5 degrees Celsius. Please be aware that younger plants such as plug plants as well as plants grown in pots will be less tolerant to cold temperatures. Warm temperate plants will usually grow outdoors in the spring and summer when temperatures are warm enough. They are often grown annually as they are more difficult to keep alive through winter. Plants will likely need to be kept in a house or other heated structure to survive winter.

Please note that pictures are used to illustrate the approximate size and look of a mature plant. Different growing conditions will result in different results.

The nursery was started by Darren Shipp in 2016. Working at his family winery for over 10 years, Darren gained a keen interest in the food industry and first-hand experience in running a business. After the winery relocated to a new site in a village called Henllan, Darren decided to turn his long-standing interest in growing edibles into a fully-fledged business. As the business focused on growing plants for the kitchen garden, it began under the name Ediplants. In 2020, after successfully expanding the nursery to now supply a large selection of ornamental as well as edible plants, Darren decided to change the name to Bedwen Plants.

All about flavour - Bedwen is first and foremost dedicated to supplying all kinds of plants for the kitchen garden. With a passion for food, the nursery has always had an aim to track down the most flavoursome varieties of fruit, vegetables, and herbs. Choosing the right variety of plant has the biggest impact on how our home-grown crops will taste. Surprisingly, many of the most common plants grown by the home grower are the same varieties as supermarkets sell. It's a well-known fact that plants bred for their produce to be sold in supermarkets are more concerned about the yield, transportability and appearance of the crops above their actual flavour. We make it a priority to find plant varieties which produce the most delicious crops.

We sell a wide variety of plant sizes to suit all budgets and skill levels; from great value plug plants for more experienced gardeners to established 4 litre plants for those wanting to get their garden up and running in the quickest time possible!

1) The plants are first removed from their plastic pot or cell tray. The roots are then submerged in water and wrapped in paper towel to ensure the plants have water on their journey.

2) After this, the plants are placed into biodegradable bags to retain the moisture and protect the outer packaging.

3) We then tightly roll the plants in a protective cardboard roll before placing them in their boxes for postage.

If in the unlikely event your plant arrives damaged, please take a photo and get in contact with us so we can work out a resolution.

Returns
If you need to return your plant to us for any reason, please ensure the rootball has some moisture and resend the plant as it was received.

The plant and garden industry has been a major contributor to pollution and damage to ecosystems over recent years. This is something that we see as extremely important and it’s a constant mission for us to do what we can to improve our environmental footprint. In order to do so, we have focused on the three most environmentally detrimental areas: plastics, pesticides, and peat.

Plastic – Plastics are unavoidable for a plant nursery as they are used in all stages of plant production. At Bedwen, we are enormously proud to have developed a system to pack and send online orders without sending plastic. The plants are first removed from their plastic pot or cell tray, they are then wrapped in paper towel and degradable bags that hold moisture. We then tightly roll the plants in a protective cardboard roll before placing them in their boxes for postage. This system allows us to reuse the plastic we cannot avoid over many years while reducing any further plastic impact on our customers and the environment.

Pesticide - Pest control is a major issue for the plant grower. The use of poisons commercially and by the home grower has caused major damage to ecosystems. At the nursery we are committed to only using natural methods of pest control and ensure daily monitoring of our plants so we can quickly react to any major pest issues. Our methods include spraying aromas such as garlic to deter pests or simply manual removal. While this is not the most cost-effective way, we believe it is essential for the environment. The latest studies have shown that slug poisons in the garden have been a major contributor to our dwindling frog and hedgehog population. Due to this, we are no longer going to stock any traditional slug pellets and have sourced sprays and pellets that dry out slugs rather than poisoning them.

Growing Media - Peat is formed in bog lands over many years. Its nutrients and structure make it an ideal growing medium for plants. However, the rate at which it is being used commercially and in the home garden has damaged natural ecosystems considerably. While some of the plants which we order in contain peat, we are proud to be completely peat free in all our in-home production at the nursery.
