Notes: A handmade flatweave kilim wall rug made in the small village of Harrania, south of Cairo. Dating from the around 1970s and showing a fruit merchant in a rural village setting, it is rendered in mostly neutral and earthy tones of wool that were naturally-dyed on site.

Harrania has been famed since the 1950s for the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre and its artistic weaving workshops run for children. It started as an educational experiment - giving the child training in weaving technique, free reign over their designs, and ownership of their work - and became a cultural success, with international exhibitions of their pieces being held since (The British Museum held an exhibition of Harranian tapestries in 2006, and hold several in their permanant collection).
