Unique Antique Black Forest Ink Well
Hand Made
Created in the Black Forest circa 1870-1900
I cannot be specific on dates or location as this piece does appear to be quite unique, its representing a mountain dog, maybe a leonberger or similar with its long coat represented in the carving, mountain dogs were very symbolic of the area and as guard and herding dogs were highly regarded as essential by the owners, with no lid this doesnt have to be an inkwell as it would server equally well as a pen pot or simply a pot.
unfortunately its not got an original either brass or glass liner, these can be replaced with some concerted searching however.
Its eyes are yellow glass, the wood appears to be a hardwood, its quite heavy, I would imagine a beech or oak
The modelling is excellent the carver has given great texture to it by cutting channels to represent fur and the proprtions are very good, its certainly a handsome piece.
2.5" Tall by 4.5" wide approx
The condition is really not bad at all, there is some rubbing taken place it is very tactile after all, i can see no cracks or one or two small noticeable chips to the base which would disappear with some ark stain, missing its liner and some old ink stains evident inside.
