In mid 19th century Europe, what we now call Indonesia was the Dutch East Indies. 1857 was the second year the Dutch produced this type of 2½ cents – very modern at the time! – and they were minted all the way until 1913. The awesome looking writing on the reverse is two languages: Javanese and Malay.
