This very nice HO gauge locomotive by Roco is 04178D a Re 4/4 IV electric locomotive in SBB red ends livery. It has running number 10104.

These four-axle prototype locomotives built were called Re 4/4 IV . Today, these four locomotives are in service as the Re 446 at Eisenbahndienstleistungen GmbH . Due to their loud air noise, they were given the nickname " vacuum cleaner ", alternatively they were also called "container" because of the angular box shape.

In April 1982, locomotive 10101 completed its first test run and was the last of the four to be handed over to the SBB in October - its sister engines had already been transferred to the SBB in the summer. In early 1983, 10104 demonstrated in the Heitersberg tunnel that it could reach the speed of 175 km/h, which is necessary to obtain a 160 km/h approval. As the SBB was testing new color schemes, each of the four locomotives was given a different livery upon delivery. The 10101 had red cabs and dark gray side panels, the 10102 the same color scheme with light gray side panels. The 10103 was completely painted red with an oversized SBB signet. This later resulted in the design for the SBB HGe 4/4 IIand the SBB Re 460 . The 10104 was also completely red, but with a small SBB signet, like the 10101 and 10102.

Despite constant improvements in locomotive technology and ironed out teething problems , it was clear in 1985 that the locomotive would not go into series production.

The loco is in very good condition as you can see in the pictures, it is tested and runs with working lights, a complete external visual inspection has shown the overall condition is very good. Due to age a service is recommended to ensure smooth running. It comes complete with its box. The box is in good if slightly shelf worn condition.

Overall this is a really nice scale locomotive and would look fantastic on a layout.

Do please have a look at my other listings, I typically have various HO and OO locos on offer as well as an extensive range of imported N gauge locos and other items.

Note: I do recommend all locos are cleaned & serviced, as they have some age to them even if the quality looks at the highest level (fairly standard advice for all locos!).
