Very good plus condition hardcover books I suspect these books to be trimmed and rebound in the 1950s. I think only the top page edges were trimmed to allow for the top page edges to be gilt. The owner signatures on the title page of each book have the top edges cropped/trimmed off.


Translated to English by Mrs. Alexander Napier. This is Scribner’s 1880 first edition in the English language. Sections of this book discuss Napoleon.


These books are from the personal library of Lincoln MacVeagh, former US ambassador to Spain, Portugal, Greece, Yugoslavia, South Africa, and Iceland. He was also US Minister to Greece. Many of these appointments were during the sensitive times of WWII.


Exterior: 3/4 leather sewn bindings are clean tight and square. Four raised bands on the spines. Leather spine and corners. Marbled paper boards. Gilt text on the spine. Top page edges bright gilt. Some spine end and spine edge wear. About 8-5/8” tall.


Interior: pages are clean with no tears or creasing. Previous owner name and date in ink top of each title page. Occasional pencil marginalia. Lincoln and Margaret MacVeagh bookplate on front pastedowns. Volume I: 430 pages. Volume II: 638 pages including index.
