Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking a very unique and somewhat rarer Altec 683B model Dynamic cardioid microphone manufactured in the 1960's by The Altec Microphone Company. The mic has a very modern / contemporary design and was quite aggressive looking compared to the stick mics of today. The 683B model was sold under their name for about 5 to 10 before being discontinued.

It comes with the period Atlas DS-5 desk stand shown as well as the metal mic clip in which to display the mic.

Pic # 2 shows this very model as well as a couple other Altec mics along with their basic characteristics. The 683B was a high quality, expensive model with an all metal design and this particular example came with the satin chrome finish. This mic could be used for both broadcasting and singing purposes. That being said the microphone has been tested and barely works as the element is compromised. This should be used for prop, display or repair purposes only. This will make a very nice conversation piece just about anywhere it's shown.

You'll notice that this 683B is in very good overall condition and certainly far average for any mic of this era. The mic has just a few lite scuff marks and tint scratches. It's free of dents, fractures or corrosion and 100% complete. This mic has some good weight to it as well. It's appx 7 inches long X 1 1/2 inches wide at the front grill. I'd rate the condition of the mic a true  8 on a scale of 1 - 10. These older mics are usually in very rough physical condition.

The mic has the unique 5 pin connection that Altec seemed to use quite a bit during this time period and to my knowledge they were the only mic company to use this configuration.

The mic comes with an old metal mic clip that fits the mic nicely and provides plenty of tension the further you push the mic into in. Like the mic the clip has a satin chrome finish and compliments the mic nicely. It will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have though a stand is already provided.

The stand is a period 1960's Atlas DS-5 model model with a cast iron base and looks just as nice as the mic. The stand makes for a very stable platform as well. The original paint shows virtually no wear. The chrome riser is just as nice.

The base still has 3 pads that are in very nice condition.

The dimensions of the mic with stand are appx 11 high X 6 wide when the mic is raised fully upright though you may lower the mic of course.
