This coin is one of four coins struck by the Royal Australian Mint, Canberra to celebrate the 100th Australian Open tennis tournament.

The four Grand Slam tournaments, Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open, represent the peak of world tennis competition. Commencing in 1877, Wimbledon was the first of these tournaments. The Australian Open, originally the Australasian Championships, started in 1905. Since then, the Australian Open has been contested each year except during the two world wars and in 1986, when the tournament shifted from mid-December to mid-January. The winner of the 2012 Australian Open Men's Singles Final will be the tournament's 100th Australian Open Men's Champion.

The obverse design features a tennis ball while the reverse features a replica of the medal presented to the Australian Open Men's tennis champion. On both obverse and reverse, the main design feature is selectively gold plated. Light marks on the case and outer cardboard pack.
