After the end of World War Two, commercial aviation quickly again expanded, also with help from several new airplane types that were able to cover longer distances. An essential part of this growth was the Douglas DC-4 which entered service with Pan Am in 1947. Pan Am inaugurated around-the-world service with the DC-4 (and Lockheed Constellation), requiring 14 stops in Europe, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific for the round trip from and back to New York.
