This vintage original and rare WWII US Navy recruiting poster features an image of American hero and Medal of Honor recipient Lieutenant Commander Edward Henry “Butch” O’Hare for whom Chicago’s O’Hare Airport is named. O’Hare is featured smiling broadly in the cockpit of Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat over text that reads High School Grad’s 18 thru 26 Fly with the Navy – Go To Your Nearest Recruiting Station – Win Your Navy Wings Be a Flying Officer.

Lieutenant Commander O'Hare became the US Navy's first fighter ace of WWII when, on February 20, 1942 he and his wingman Marion William Dufilho heroically and singlehandedly attacked a formation of nine Japanese Mitsubishi G4M “Betty” medium bombers approaching the USS Lexington aircraft carrier on which they were based. O’Hare and Dufilho managed to destroy five of the attacking Japanese bombers and in so doing likely saved the USS Lexington from enemy damage and possibly loss. O’Hare's actions were widely celebrated and he became a national hero only to be killed in action while leading the US Navy’s first-ever nighttime fighter attack launched from an aircraft carrier while serving on the USS Enterprise on 26 November 1943. In February 1949 Orchard Field Airport in Chicago was renamed O’Hare International Airport.

This vintage original poster was never hung or used and has no tape or pinholes. The poster shows light handling wear including a slight bumping on the edges in spots. Overall condition is very good.
