FOR SALE: Sophos SG 210 14-port Gigabit router/firewall running pfSense.

The device is implemented in a rack-mountable form factor (mounting brackets, although not in a matching color, are included). To decouple the device from the manufacturer’s licensing and services, we have installed and configured pfSense, an open-source operating system for networking equipment.

To test the device and make port functions consistent with on-device labeling, we made a few changes to the initial pfSense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset the software to its initial state.

In its stock form, the device ran on an Intel Celeron G1820 processor with 8 GB RAM. We have upgraded the processor to Intel Core i7-4770S (four cores / eight threads, 3.10 GHz base frequency, 3.90 GHz turbo frequency, AES-NI support) and RAM to 16 GB. The sole storage device is a 120 GB Intel SSD. There are six Gigabit Ethernet ports serviced by Intel i210 controllers. Additionally, there is an eight-port Gigabit expansion module with ports serviced by Intel i340 controllers.

The device is actively cooled.

During installation, we configured the Ethernet ports to match labeling on the device’s case. (Needless to say, all these settings are changeable.) We also installed and configured the LCDproc package, which allows to show system information on the device’s built-in small display. The buyer will receive detailed configuration notes so the device can be put to work right out of the box.

A power cable (Look Ma! No power brick!) is included.
