Your vintage Imitation Hemstitcher operates beautifully using a vintage Singer standard presser foot with the narrow/shorter right toe or similar foot.

And it was a LOT of fun and very easy to use!
I've included a replica of the instructions which covers rug making and hemstitching.

Hemstitching is an attractive embellishing stitch commonly seen on the hems of sheets and pillow cases, other linens and crisp summer blouses. It can be used anywhere you want to apply a custom designer look.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is how it works!
Fold the fabric snugly over your vintage Hemstitching Tool (right sides together). Loosen your sewing machine's upper tension a little. The sewing machine presser foot's "little toe" sits against the raised metal ridge on the right of the tool.
~~~
NOTE: Don't pull or push your vintage Imitation Hemstitching Tool. Your sewing machine feed dogs will feed the fabric (with the tool inside) under the needle evenly (you may need to lengthen the stitch a little). The needle should stitch freely between the two metal forks.

~~~
Cut neatly along the fold, gently pull the two fabrics apart to even up the threads and press the seam allowance open.
~~~
Adjust your sewing machine's upper tension back to normal and stitch very closely next to the edge of the imitation hemstitching along each side.

And Voila!
(I had so much fun, I did it twice)

Ok
Now let's look at rug making!
(I prefer to call this making faux furrrrrry bits)!
Note: The open end (top) of the tool can close accidently if you press against it to fit the tool snugly against the fabric fold or when wrapping the tool a little too tightly with yarn for rug making. This may cause the needle to hit metal. The two bars at the open end must be apart.
~~~
I used pearled crochet cotton size 5 to evenly wrap around the tool and reduced the upper tension slightly.
 Place the presser foot onto the tool with the right "little toe" against the raised metal ridge and stitch down the center.
You can repeat this process fitting the tool snugly up against the previous line of loops to create a larger area of loops (faux furrrry bits). Or enjoy creating detailed craft projects, yours or children's clothes, stuffed toys, embellishing home decor, hats, gloves...whatever! Be creative!
Ready to use!
