In the wake of World War II on April 4th 1949, the twelve founding members of NATO signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington DC, and the NATO defense alliance was born. The founding members were: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, and United States.
