Up for sale is this Kansas City, Missouri, Charter #11472, $5.00 1929 Type-1 Small Size. Fr. #1800-1, with treasury signatures of Edward E. Jones as Register of the Treasury and Walter O. Woods as Treasurer of The United States. The cashier of this bank is S.M. Cooke and the President of the bank is Thornton Cooke.
This bank chartered in October of 1919 as “The Columbia National Bank of Kansas City, Missouri”. This bank choose not to issue large size Nationals, but did issue 74,150 small size notes from 1929 thru July of 1935 when the note issuing period ended. There were 40 National Banks in Kansas City, Missouri that issued National Currency. Only 7 of those 40 banks lasted long enough to issue Series 1929 small size Nationals. Only 2 of those 7 banks are rarer than this one!
The note has four nice even margins on both sides of the note. This note is well worn from years of circulation with some dirt and light staining. I do not see any rips, tears, or splits, but I do see 7 pinholes, 6 of which are near the left and right margins and the 7th is in the top margin at the far-right corner. I grade this note as a Fine, but you look at the scans and judge for yourself before bidding. This was a $5.00 only bank, meaning that it only issued $5.00 Nationals which were the workhorse banknote at the time. The Kelly Census shows 39 small size notes reported on this bank. There are 14 - $5.00 Type –1’s and 25 - $5.00 Type-2’s. This note is listed in the census and part of the above numbers.
This note would make a fine addition to any Missouri State banknote collection. The bank was located in Jackson County. This note should appeal to those collecting that County and its surrounding areas. This note should also appeal to those people collecting $5.00 Only National Banks. Don’t let this note get away!
