Devastated by the deaths of his wife and daughter, murdered by a serial killer, Red John, still nowhere to be found, Patrick Jane, a television medium, became a consultant to the CBI, the California Bureau of Investigation. Thanks to his telepathic gifts and his talent for analysis, he manages to elucidate the most complex cases. But in fact, the kind Patrick Jane has only one goal: to find Red John. There are a thousand and one reasons to love this “Mentalist”, starting with the character of Patrick Jane, played by the Australian Simon Baker (a real revelation), a handsome guy, but not only that. Tortured, manipulative, facetious, he is never where we expect him, and this offbeat hero, too intelligent to be true, is surely one of the most endearing in the audiovisual landscape. Its partners are not left out. Agent Lisbon (Robin Tunney), both skeptical and curious, upright and fragile, is often moving, and the three other members of her picturesque team (Amanda Righetti, Owain Yeoman, Tim Kang) also command sympathy. The chiseled and witty dialogues, and the total absence of spectacularity (which makes it an ideal series for apprentice detectives who appreciate neither blood, nor hospital corridors, nor adrenaline rushes galore) make this show created by Bruno Heller (“Rome”), a worthy successor to the brilliant “Columbo”. This second season, broadcast in 2009 in the United States, rises brilliantly to the height of the previous one. Over the course of these twenty-three new investigations, the relationships between the protagonists evolve, and if the humor is omnipresent, the tragedy of the Red John affair, a dark part of the plot, remains the constant which gives the series all its its depth.
