Lupita Martinez (1919-2011) was a prominent Pueblo potter from the San Ildefonso community.  Her grandmother reportedly was the person who taught the basics of pottery-making to a young Maria Martinez.  Lupita was an active potter for most of her life, creating both plain and painted blackware pieces.  This particular jar came from an estate with documentation suggesting that the pot dated to 1943; however, that seems unlikely and it probably dates to the 1950's or 1960's.

The pot is 9.25" tall, 5.25 inches in diameter at the top and 8" diameter at the widest point.  The polishing is unusually good for blackware of this era.  There are no chips, cracks, or repairs.  One small contact mark at the edge of the shoulder exists and is shown in the photo; it is about 3/8" long.  There are also two short, faint vertical scratches near the base that are about 1" in length.  Otherwise the piece is clean and would be a great addition to your pottery collection or Southwestern decor theme.

I ship pottery double-boxed for protection and of course insured for the full amount of the sale.
