Antique Silver Filigree Knitting Needle Guards / Bar

Germany * Circa 1850

This elegant silver piece was made to hold double ended knitting pins with knitting in progress to keep it from coming off of the needles. The ends slide apart to accommodate different sizes of needles. The guards at the end are decorated with petals of handmade silver filigree (test 800/1000 pure silver) and the sliding bar is silver colored metal. The lack of marks tells me it's probably German.

The condition is excellent with no dents or other damage and it slides perfectly. It measures 7 3/4" long closed but it slides out to 11 1/4" long. It would hold needles from about 5" to 8" long.
