The images feature men, women, and children practicing Judo and many instructional photographs. A well illustrated treatise on Judo by its creator, Jigoro Kano, and published the year before he died. Jigoro Kano was an educator and athlete who advocated for the inclusion of martial arts in the Olympics and was the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee. Number 16 in the Tourist Library Series, published during a notable period of modernization in Japan, the books were written on various aspects of Japanese culture, providing background on the traditions along with information on how they had evolved and were present in modern culture. They were intended particularly for Western tourists to become informed and curious about the cultural offerings of modern Japan. Scarce copy of an important and beautiful work, the most collectible from the Tourist Library series.
