Born in Kyoto in 1900, Asano Takeji graduated from the Kyoto City School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1919, and in 1923 from the Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. The artist and printmaker Tsuchida Bakusen was one of his early teachers with whom he studied Japanese-style painting. In 1929 Asano helped to organize the Kyoto Creative Print Society (Kyoto Sosaku-Hanga Kyokai) with a few other artists interested in developing their own style through carving their own woodblocks. However, Asano continued to also publish shin hanga landscape prints most notably those that were published in collaboration with Unsodo during the 1950’s. This print is one of his sosaku prints and was self published in 1970.
