Japanese Hanging Scroll Kakejiku

This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (kakejiku or makimono) features a take on the Sixteen Arhats, a group of elders who achieved Nirvana. This kakejiku is painted using different colors such as green, blue, red, and purple. On the top left part of the piece, there is a calligraphed text. This piece is signed by an artist and a red seal.

Kakejiku is a Japanese picture or calligraphy mounted on a piece of paper. Kakejiku was a tool to spread Buddhism in Japan. It has been integrated with Japanese culture as interior decoration. Tokokake is used at the Tokonoma in tatami room. Chakake has Zen words used in the tea ceremony room. Buddha-kake is used in the Buddhist altar.
