Dark green leather bookmark, depicting St. Thomas Becket, with gilt lettering and design, and fringed at the bottom. Approx 9” x 1¾”. This is copied from a memorial brass plaque at the church in Cowfold, West Sussex.

Thomas Becket aka Thomas à Becket and St. Thomas Becket (ca. 1120-1170) was Lord Chancellor under English King Henry II (1155-1162), and thereafter the Archbishop of Canterbury until his death. He was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by followers of King Henry II—whether or not by the King’s direct order or request (or neither) has remained unclear. Becket was canonized in 1173.

For the followers of contemporary fiction, by the way, Becket’s murder is in a scene toward the end of Ken Follett’s 1989 novel, The Pillars of the Earth. The most prominent (fictional) “bad guy” in that story is included among those who attacked Becket.
