This is an antique, original 1900 handwritten letter on “Southern Engine and Boiler Works, Incorporated 1884, Manufacturers of engines, boilers, saw mills, saw mill dogs, shafting, grist mills, pulleys, presses, corn mills, cotton gins, architectural iron work” letterhead stationary with great graphics. The letter was written by John Ennis Cobb, who appears to have been a medical student at Vanderbilt University at the time, and eventually a student at American School of Osteopathy. The paper measures approximately 8.25“ x 11“. It has some creasing from being folded and light wear.

The letter reads:

“Nashville, Tenn. Sept. 30, 1900.

Dear Ma,

Arrived ok yesterday am at 6 o’clock. Took breakfast and dinner at the Maxwell House but am now rooming at 907 So. College St. and taking my meals about four doors south. Went through the college yesterday, and think I will like it all right. Went in the dissecting room about the first thing and (undecipherable) across about half a dozen “stiffs“ that had already been carved. Will get to carving some myself this week. Nashville seems to be OK and I hope I am permanently located. Will have a roommate from Paris, Texas. He will move in about Tuesday, so when he comes over, will get down to work. Broke my lamp globe, as I expected, but will get another tomorrow. As ever, Ennis (?)”
