DESCRIPTION: The beautiful earthenware pitcher was hand painted using a purple, yellow and green color palate on copper lustre. The spray of 4 tulip blooms with their green leaves adorns both sides of the pitcher.
CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There is very fine crazing as is normal under the glaze on this type of earthenware produced in this time period. This is on the bottom and on the inside in areas that do not have the copper lustre.
DIMENSIONS: The pitcher has a widest diameter of 4 1/4" with a height of 5 3/4". Handle to spout is 6".
HISTORY/MARKS: G. H. Heath, in association with John & William Wade, formed Wade & Co. in 1887 in Burslem, Staffordshire, England producing domestic earthenware. In 1927, it became Wade Heath & Co., Ltd. producing fancy ornamental & domestic earthenware, giftware & tableware. In 1989, it became Wade Ceramics Ltd and is still producing today. The Wade Made in England mark on this pitcher is from Wade, Heath & Co. & is mark #3962 which was used from 1953-1957 as cited in Geoffrey A. Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks.
