Description

Vintage Japanese Wooden Storage Box for Hanging Scroll  w/ Box

Hand-crafted and in a light brown color, this sturdy, slender wooden box is made to store a hanging scroll or kakejiku. The lid fits flush on the top. It has two carved wooden brackets inside used to keep a scroll in place. There is calligraphy kanji on the lid and a red stamp signature on the inside. This wooden box comes with the original paper box and an instructional pamphlet about the care and display of hanging scrolls.

Typically on display in Japanese tokonoma alcoves in homes and other traditional establishments such as ryokan, and traditional Japanese inns. Hanging scrolls have various themes, from seasonal/holiday images to poems to Buddhist text and imagery. For additional decorative detail, it's popular to add scroll weights, or fuchin, which are tassels with heavy polished stones that hang from the bottom end caps.
