Up for auction is this Edgar Westbury designed Kestrel? Spark Ignition, Circa 1937. It is in very good used mechanical and cosmetic condition. Nothing is bent broken or butchered. Compression is fair although  it does  bleed off. The timing points Assembly appears to be original as does the cast alloy tank and trademark radial finned Cylinder head.

Edgar was the Associate Editor of The Model Engineer magazine in the early 1930’s and 40’s and designed and built several engines in both 2 and 4 stroke format. He also produced drawings and casting kits for some of these designs, and it would appear that this particular motor is the result of that endeavour. It is unclear who the actual amateur model engineer was and interestingly this particular motor has a rudimentary “throttle” control.

Similarly although it closely resembles the Westbury Kestrel it appears to be of slightly greater capacity and is stamped “HEAVER 1” on the front of the separate exhaust section.

Unfortunately unless someone out there knows the history of this ancient piece of machinery, its maker will remain unidentified. Regardless of its creator it is a wonderful example of turning rough sand castings into a working engine and  tells its own story simply by the way it has been made.

Please view all images as they depict the very good  overall used condition of this early and iconic British Spark Ignition motor from pre the Second World War.
