Antique Mauchline Ware Pincushion / Thimble Case

Scottish * Circa 1890s

This Mauchline ware pin cushion is in the form of a bucket and has a (once) velvet cushion on top. It is decorated on one side with a transfer print of the "Brighton New Pier". The other side shows the "N.E. View of Brighton Pavilion". This piece was probably made by the W. & A. Smith Co. in Mauchline Scotland. The top comes off and a thimble is stored in the case below.

The daisy-knurled thimble is sterling silver with the English hallmarks for Chester 1898 and the maker's mark for Henry Williamson, Ltd. It's about an American size 10 (16.5 mm diameter opening). The inside top looks like it might have had a hole repaired, but it was well done. The condition is otherwise nice with no dents or holes.

The cushion on top is intact but missing most of its velvet nap. The wood is in excellent condition with hardly a nick and the varnish is perfect. It measures 2 1/4" high and the top is 1 3/4" in diameter.
