George Washington (1732-1799), first President of the U.S.A.
In 1916, the Postal Service issued the last of the flat plate imperforate stamps, and the first to be printed on unwatermarked paper. The 1¢ Washington was commonly available and could be purchased in full sheets from the Philatelic Agency for up to 10 years after it was first issued.
