Exquisite Decorative WALL PLATE 10 7/8", PORTRAIT PLATE w/Man & Couple Pattern, Floral Garland & Scrollwork w/GOLD Trim, from FSC Czecho-Slovikia Carlsbad, circa 1920
DESCRIPTION: This decorator wall plate is from FSC Czecho-Slovikia Carlsbad (Friedrich Simon Company Karlsbad) that was produced circa 1920. This hand painted pattern is particularly striking with the deep brown wash behind the 3 persons in period dress, the dark blue wide band with gold bows, a delicate floral garland w/Geometric symbols and a bold gold band at the rim. On the dark brown wash, there are 7 sprigs of gold leaves. The gold scrollwork next to the inside rim falls towards the center of the plate and is on the brown wash. There is great detail in the dress and features of the people. Study the close-up photos to see how exquisite this painting is.
CONDITION: While this plate is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There is no wear to the gold or the paint.
DIMENSIONS: The decorator plate has a diameter of 10 7/8" with a height of 7/8".
HISTORY/MARKS: The art studio is the noted Friedrich Simon Company, a decorating studio in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia (Karlsbad). The company was in existence from 1900 to 1945. The company purchased blanks from Bohemia Ceramic Works and other Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad, Bohemia, Austria) area factories. He used a flag mark on pieces as the original factory mark that included FSC or FSK, presumably for Friedrich Simon of Carlsbad or Karlsbad. The decorator overglaze mark #1775 is cited on page 224 in Marks on German, Bohemian, and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present by Robert E. Rontgen 3rd edition. The mark is cited as about 1920. This plate also has the manufacturer mark from Royal Austrian Factory (beehive mark) which also is circa 1920.
