Worthy representative of the Enlightenment, Boyer d'Argens is a philosophical writer, skeptic and pamphleteer, his series of critical books and correspondence, in the manner of Persian Letters ( Jewish, Chinese letters, caballistic letters) made him famous.
In the Epistle, the author confesses his motivations in writing this novel, the Jewish usurer who played during his military time, he claims here paint an honest Jew. The work is actually a libertine novel recounting the love of Count Vaxere intended prior to the ecclesiastical state. The love of a Venetian Jewish will lead to a conversion.
