Antique Sterling Silver Sewing Thimble Finger Guard

English * Circa 1870

This solid sterling silver (tested) finger guard or shield was worn on the index finger of the left hand. It was to protect the finger underneath from the needle's point as it was pushed through the fabric being stitched. A regular thimble was used on the right hand. It has a deeply faceted rim and a hand-engraved band. The top has a ribbed pattern to deflect the needle.

The condition is mint without a mark, the best condition I've ever seen one of these in. It is about an American child's size 5 (13.8 mm diameter opening). One just like this is shown on p. 119 of Thimbles by Edwin Holmes.

I stand behind everything that I offer and guarantee that it is exactly as presented.
