Genre: Western

LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
John Wayne stars as the sheriff of a small western town who arrests a murderer and then must contend with the aggressive efforts of the killer's brother to free him before the state marshall arrives. Surrounding the town, the villains make repeated runs at the tiny jailhouse where their comrade is incarcerated. The sheriff is left to defend the territory almost single-handedly -- his only aid being a rag-tag crew of misfits, including a drunk, an old cripple, a saloon woman, and a singing teenager. The plot's tensions build to one of the most explosive finales in cinema history.

Duel at Diablo / Hour of the Gun
204 min. - Color
Genre: Western

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Based on the novel APACHE RISING by Marvin Albert, this bold and inspired western meets every expectation of its genre. Director Ralph Nelson keeps the pace lively in this Calvary verses the Indians narrative and puts both James Garner and Sidney Poitier to great use. Garner plays Jess Remsberg, a rugged handsome scout, and Poitier plays Toller, a former trooper, who now makes a living breaking in horses. Bill Travers is their formidable leader, Lt. Scotty McAllister. When the vigorous McAllister leads his group of recruits to a far away fort they are unexpectedly attacked by Apaches. The group is saved by Remsberg's knowledge of the Indians and Toller also helps out in unexpected ways. Poitier stretches here, and the result is a surprising and delightful characterization. The well staged, action packed, battle sequences are also a credit to Nelson's direction. Look for Richard Farnsworth, who turns in a memorable cameo as the wagon driver.

John Sturges directed this sequel to his Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which is more of a melancholy character study than an action western. The Edward Anhalt screenplay (based on Douglas D. Martin's Tombstone's Epitaph) trace's Wyatt Earp's (James Garner) moral decline from a lawman with high ideals to a mean-spirited vigilante bent on personal revenge. Ironically, Doc Holliday (Jason Robards), an admitted lawless gambler, reacts to Earp's vengeful turnabout by becoming the moral force that Earp has rejected. When Earp's brothers are killed by goons employed by Ike Clanton (Robert Ryan), Earp becomes obsessed with vengeance and organizes a posse to track down the killers. --- Paul Brenner
