Description: This superb quality Nippon decorative piece has radiant raised gold on white and cream. This is hand painted on a blank of high quality porcelain with gold outlining and solid gold leaf.
Condition: The condition of this bowl is superb. There is no rubbing to the hand painted gold. We can find only very minor age-appropriate wear to the gold on the trim lines of the rim. (See the photos.) There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, repairs or hairlines.
Dimensions: The bowl has a diameter of 6 7/8" from handle tip to handle tip. Without the handles, the diameter of the bowl is 6" and it has a height of 1 13/16".
History/Marks: Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing fine bone china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this piece is the blue Maple Leaf Mark. The Maple Leaf Mark is attributed to Noritake and its forerunner in the 1890’s to 1921 time period. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. In ABC’s of Collecting Nippon Porcelain, Van Patten attributes the Maple Leaf mark to since 1891-1921. This seems to narrow the window of use for the Maple Leaf mark to 1891-1918.Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
