DESCRIPTION: This set was skillfully designed using a color palette of rust red, bone, green, silver and russet brown. The overall quality of the hand painted design is quite professional. The russet brown trim on the rims is bordered by golden brown Greek key design. This is repeated again on the cups' handle. The India Tree of Life is on both side of the cup. The silver is used as a highlight on the trunks of the Trees of Life and must be observed by turning the cups just right at an angle in bright light. The inside of the cups have 2 large floral sprays. Please check our eBay store for more items in the India Tree pattern.
CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, its condition is as noted. The first cup has a flake on the inside rim. The second cup has slight browning or mottling on the inside. The third cup has crazing and slight browning on the inside. See the photos. Otherwise, there are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, or hairlines. Overall, the trim is glossy and appears as applied. There is no wear to the paint.
DIMENSIONS: The cups have a diameter of 3 3/4" and have a height of 2 1/8". The capacity of the cups is 6 ounces.
HISTORY/MARKS: The 37 year old Josiah Spode founded his Spode Pottery Company at Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 after having worked with many of the best potters in the Stoke-on-Trent area from the age of 16. He is credited with the development of a winning formula for making fine bone china and the perfection of blue under-glaze printing. Three of his original transferware patterns are still being produced today: Tower Blue, Willow, and Blue Italian. In 1833, Spode Pottery was sold to William Taylor Copeland and remained in the Copeland family until 1966. By 1976, the company had become part of the Royal Worcester Spode Group. Today, it is part of the Portmeirion Group and continues the production of high quality fine bone china at Stoke-on-Trent. The brown printed mark on these cups is identified in Robert Copeland’s Spode & Copeland Marks as mark #259 used 1920-1957.
