J. J. Armes was a successful private detective who had lost his hands in a childhood accident. Ideal produced the J.J. Armes toy line in 1976. J. J. was vinyl, 10-inches tall with Captain Actionesque joints and articulation. He came dressed in pants, a sweater and vest marked JJ, and boots. Instead of hands, the Jay James Armes figure had clever accessories that let him use his "hands" as tools and weapons. These pieces were stored in a red briefcase. The contents of the case included two suction cups for climbing walls, a magnet for hanging onto steel structures, a machete to cut his way out of tough situations, a pair of false hands for undercover roles, a hook that converts to a pistol, and a pair of spring loaded hooks.

This offering is an example of a complete version of the toy described, including a functioning hooked hands that can be used to grasp objects (one photo shows these functioning hooks grasping the action figures boots) as well as a functioning magnet (can be seen in one photo holding a metal allen wrench (wrench shown for demonstration purposes only and not included in the offering).  All joints move with ease, as does the head.  Hands are threaded can can be unscrewed from the arms as replaced by other tools as desired.

An original advertisement photo is provided in this listing to show what equipment came in the red suitcase.
