Set in the very early 20th century.   Geoffrey Ravenslee is very rich and very bored with life. Enter into his library (via a window) Spike, the 16 year old who lives with his older half-sister, Hermione, in Hell's Kitchen. After hearing Spike's tale, Mr. Ravenslee, leaves his house on the Hudson River and his rascally servants, behind for an adventure, hoping to find The Definite Object.

Hardcover;  green boards with black titles on spine and front;  published by Sampson Low, Marston & Co Ltd, London and Edinburgh, 1917;   book list opposite title page lists from "The Broad Highway" to "Beltane the Smith".

Jeffery Farnol (1878-1952) was a British writer from 1907 until his death.  He produced about 40 novels and volumes of stories, and some non-fiction and children's books.  His 40 romance novels were set in the Georgian Era or English Regency period. He, with Georgette Heyer, largely initiated the Regency romantic genre.

Farnol published his first romance novel My Lady Caprice in 1907.  Two of his early books, The Amateur Gentleman and The Broad Highway, have been issued in a version edited by romance novelist Barbara Cartland. The Amateur Gentleman was adapted for British cinema in 1920 and 1936, American cinema in 1926.
